Outgoing Letter from President Helen Skinner

At the closing of my year as president of the Superstition Mountain Chapter- of Realtors, I want to share with you the joy that this service has given me this year of 2012. Our Realtor of the Year is Pam Cohen, Affiliate of the year is Romy Watts, & National Affiliate is Sharon Stover, just serving with this caliber of leaders is wonderful—making a selection was hard so many deserved the recognition.

I would like to compare this year to the story of “The Little Engine That Could”. We were short of Realtor Members but “We thought we could, we thought we could, we thought we could”. We kept looking forward and one day when several friends stepped up to become members, the change came –it went from “We think we can” to WE BELIEVE WE CAN”. If you truly believe you can—you can. We believed & we gained amazing new members that want to be involved in building our Chapter. We are moving forward with the Belief that we can do anything, especially if we work together as a team. The team for 2013: Mary Jo Thomas-President, Romy Watts-President Elect, Pam Cohen-V.P.of Membership, Stephanie Hicks-Treasurer, Suzanne Matlosz-Secretary. There are others that are stepping up to fill all positions- they all are truly amazing.

November 16- was a very big date that shows the leadership that our Chapter has. Pam Cohen, Academy Mortgage, our Ways & Means Chair along with Mary Jo Thomas & Celia Maddox- Solutions Real Estate- stepped up to the plate to successfully accomplish our Annual Golf Tournament @ night!. They built a team of so many caring & helpful people that wanted to help make this event a success. The team included Judy Warga-The Tallman Group, Stephanie Hicks-First American Title, Sharon Stover-Carpets Direct, Debra Castor-Academy Mortgage, Natalee Bereford-E Square Builders LLC, Victoria Schreiner-Schreiner Realty LLC & Property Management, Lee Worthington-Driggs Title Agency Inc., Gerod Belnap- Country Financial. What a team & we had a great turnout- thanks to a lot of sponsors and team creators, Thank You All!

Our last 2 events #1- Friday-December 14 Business Resource Meeting where our 2013 board members will be inducted and I pass the gavel to the new President, come & enjoy. #2- collect $ for the Child Crisis Center at “Meet Santa & Mrs. Claus” (100% go to the Child Crisis Center). (1st night, December 14 7P-9P & 2nd night December 21- 7P-9P) Bring your Camera. Location at Schreiner Realty House of Lights- 3054 E. Inverness Ave., Mesa—gift cards & cash would be greatly appreciated. Thank You All for the opportunity to serve.

A Presidents Report- Memories new and old.

Our Chapter- Superstition Mountain Chapter – the Board Officers lead by Mary Jo
Thomas our President Elect, has strived to put together the programs of our monthly
Business Resource Meetings 2012 with true value. With the help of Celia Maddox our
V.P. of Membership and our Board Team, we have created more than value but a real
reason for our members and others to attend our meetings, filled with Education and
networking opportunity.

July’s meeting had a real memory reward for me (like going a full circle or serendipity).
Our speaker was Kent Rini with Crime Busters and he was speaking about the many
precautions –etc. that we should do to be safe in The Real Estate World.

As he was talking I had a flash back about 26 years ago, that this speaker (Kent) saved
my life or the quality of it. I was a licensed agent for about 2 years and went to a
conference where I heard a speaker telling us how to be safe in doing open houses and
showing vacant homes, etc. At this time in my life there were not cell phones, beepers,
pagers or even caller ID, real tools that I could have used then. When I returned home I
was more observant of my surroundings and felt I would be more cautious in the future.

About two days following I got a call to show a house I had on the market to rent. It was
a man and he said he and his two friends were looking for a home to rent and they would
like to see this home. We made an appointment for about an hour later. I had a neighbor
come over to watch my children while I went down the street to show the home for rent.
As I was walking there I noticed the next door neighbor was outside working in the yard
& asked him if he would stay there until the clients left—I just didn’t have a good feeling
about them. When they came it was 3 men in their mid-twenties to early thirties and one
had a scar on his left cheek. They seemed to be well groomed and friendly but soon the
one with the scar seemed to be irritated with the others by them telling him “no not now”.
I showed the home but always keeping my back between them and an escape route (what
I was told in that meeting to do). I kept calm and answered their questions and then the
older one said that they had another home to see and would call me back if they were
more interested. I stayed there until they were out of sight, then thanked the neighbor and
went home.

Two nights later I was watching the 5 o’clock news with a report of an attack in a model
home where the agent was beaten and left for dead—she was able to do a police sketch of
the attacker and he had a scar on his left cheek and he had 2 other men with him. It was
him and his two friends that I showed the home to—the drawing was him! I thought I
should call the police but I was home alone at the time with my children so I decided that
the next day I would call them. I didn’t have a phone number but maybe I could tell them
a little about their car—but that’s it. The following day the report came on TV that the
police had found the suspects, I knew how close I came to having my world/life change
dramatically.

As I watch Friday, July 13, 2012 at the meeting I knew it was Kent Rini that was the
speaker that gave me the safety tips that saved my life. I will always be grateful for that
reunion during our Business Resource Meeting, of the memories of learning something I
would of missed if I had not attended .

I want to thank the many great people I have gotten to know and serve in Women’s
Council- for almost 6 years now and hope that all we serve has made a difference in their
lives, if not only uniting old friends and past or new friends in the Real Estate World.

Together we can make a good difference for all.

Superstition Mountain Chapter

President’s Report, February 2012

It is my pleasure to announce that we are continuing our support of Child Crisis Center, Mesa, headed by Sharon Stover, Carpet Direct, and Victoria Schreiner, Shreiner Realty. Last month they assigned jars for Quarters for Kids donations. Each member fills the jar and returns at following meeting. What a creative way to raise funds. Many have been placed in offices to catch all who pass by the jars at the front desk.

This month, we are collecting donations of anything red or pink, or Target Gift Cards, for the children.

Plans are well underway for our second annual Golf Tournament under the direction of Judi Gustin, Sun Mortgage. This was extremely successful last year and we are excited to repeat our success. Judi Gustin is chairing her first meeting February 6th to discuss sponsorships. A portion of our proceeds will again be given to our designated charity and toward the funding of officers to attend Women’s Council of REALTORS® State and National conferences.

We were fortunate to be able to fund full and partial reimbursements to our 2012 line officers last year. This was a first for this chapter and we anticipate doing same this year. We can do it with everyone helping in their areas of expertise. In addition, we were also able to fund awards for the outgoing line officers, our Affiliate and Realtor® of the year. This was also a first for this chapter. What an achievement for us made possible by our members involvement.
